Camp Friedlander Leadership Training Weekend

A weekend of team trust activities, fishing, rock wall climbing, rappelling and rope courses; Boys Hope Girls Hope knows how to do leadership training right! For two days, the Boys Hope Girls Hope staff and scholars participated in the third annual Buenger Leadership Training. It was held at the Dan Beard Council/Boy Scouts of America’s Camp Friedlander in Loveland. The training contained different levels of C.O.P.E activities:  Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience.

The weekend started out with a series of activities, each one presenting a problem intended for a group solution. Teamwork, communication and trust were crucial aspects for successfully completing the tasks. In addition, some people were mute or blindfolded during the challenges. For example, View Place scholar Sam was blindfolded as the other scholars lifted him and passed him carefully through a web of “deadly lasers” (ropes).

That afternoon, staff and scholars climbed or rappelled down the rock climbing tower and fished in the nearby pond.   Everyone spent the evening barbequing and making Smores around the camp fire.  It was a perfect time for us to enjoy the wilderness and relax after a challenging day.

Sunday morning brought the most exciting C.O.P.E activity of them all:  The high ropes course.  This course consisted of climbing a giant ladder, army crawling across a rope, and walking a tight rope 25 feet from the ground!  The course ends with a fun ride down the zip line.   Many scholars and some staff finished the course successfully.

The weekend at Camp Friedlander was challenging yet fun-filled.  All of the staff and scholars enjoyed engaging in the C.O.P.E. course.  We look forward to visiting Camp Friedlander in the future.

Hearts for Hope Gala: A Night of Celebration!

The annual Boys Hope Girls Hope Hearts for Hope Gala was held at the Xavier University Cintas Center on February 9, 2008. More than 400 guests representing business partners and friends gathered to enjoy an evening of good food, friends and fun. The cardinal theme of the evening was Celebrating 25 Years of Hope - homes, opportunity, parenting and education.

Along with our Scholars, the presentation of the Heart of Gold Award took center stage. The Boys Hope Girls Hope Heart of Gold Award is bestowed upon an individual, business or foundation that exemplifies good will and support for Greater Cincinnati's youth. The 2008 Heart of Gold was awarded to the E. Thomas Arington Foundation. The Foundation provides moral, spiritual and financial support to 25 non-profit organizations nationally and internationally. Thomas Arington, a steadfast and generous friend of Boys Hope Girls Hope since 1984, received the award in the name of the E. Thomas Arington Foundation. He is truly a "person for others" and has blessed Boys Hope Girls Hope in many ways.

The presentation was accompanied by a live and silent auction with items ranging from a five-night stay in Vail, Colorado to a beautiful Rookwood vase. The 22 Cincinnati Boys Hope Girls Hope Living and Learning Scholars joined in the evening's festivities with introductions highlighting their successes within the program. Many conveyed their joy in embracing the opportunities provided to them through the generosity of Boys Hope Girls Hope benefactors and staff.

After dinner, our Scholars and guests enjoyed dancing to the music of Soul Pocket. Chris Niehaus won the diamond Journey necklace donated by Herzog Jewelers of Fort Mitchell, Kentucky.

Thanks to our many patrons, benefactors, guests, and local businesses that donated auction items. The Heart of Gold Gala would not have been such a success without your generosity. The night's event contributed over $148,000 to the general operation of Boys Hope Girls Hope! Thank you so much!
